Next CertFAA course announced for Autumn 2019

In response to demand, the next Certificate in Funeral Arranging and Administration course will be held near Gatwick Airport, commencing on 10th September.

Applications are welcomed from staff of NAFD member firms across the South East.

Latest CertFAA course Takes off!

The latest course started on 24th April; 15 students, from 8 member firms, are working towards the exam on 26th June.

AGM and Education Prize-giving 1st May

The 74th Annual General Meeting of the Association was held at Amba Hotel, Charing Cross. 

70 attendees were welcomed by President Richard van Nes, who thanked the Executive Committee and members for their support during his thoroughly enjoyable year in office, during which he had proudly represented LAFD at a variety of events. 

A highlight of his year had been the very successful, royal-themed, Banquet & Ball, in February. Earlier in the day, the President had delivered a cheque to his chosen charity, The Household Division Charity, in respect of £5,000 raised from the raffle and auction at the Ball.

The Executive had had a busy year. Richard highlighted the Association’s new involvement in the London Mortuary Managers’ Group, its ongoing committment to the London Funeral Liaison Group and activities, supported by NAFD, to oppose Councils’ unfair trading practices.  

Members received updates on recent legislative developments and changes to Health & Safety guidance and on matters of national interest and developments being addressed by NAFD.

Western District Chairman Michael Tiney reported on its recent activities. The 10th Anniversary Casino Night party, on 5th April, had been a great success.  The District had a new Secretary, Victoria Kibble.

New Southern District Chairman, Tony Pearson, reported on the recent AGM and changes to the local Committee, introducing his Vice-chairman and Secretary.

Changes of Officers of the Association were celebrated during the evening,

Richard passed on the chain of office to new President Adam Ginder.

Michael Tiney was elected Vice-president.

Richard van Nes was elected Hon. Treasurer, succeeding Graham Saville.


Graham, a Past President, retired from the Committee after many years’ valuable service.
Richard presented Graham and his wife Sue, both Honorary members of LAFD, with a token of his thanks for their support.  

LAFD’s Education Committee had been busy in recent months.

A cohort of students were awaiting their results from the Certificate in Funeral Arranging and Administration examination at the end of March.

The latest CertFAA course had started in April. 

The first course to be held in the South of the region had completed in November 2018; during the meeting, 15 of the 18 successful students were presented with Certificates and lapel pins.

LAFD supports Household Division Charity

Each year the Association raises funds for a charity selected by that year’s President.

For his year of office, President Richard van Nes nominated The Household Division Charity, which supports past and present members of the British Army’s Household Division Regiments and their families.

On 1st May Richard was delighted to visit Horseguards to present the charity with £5,000 raised at the Banquet and Ball in February, supplemented by a further £200 from Western District’s Casino Night Party.

The cheques were received on behalf of the charity by Major General Ben Bathurst CBE.


Annual General Meeting 1st May 2019

The 2019 AGM will be held in the Regency Room at the Amba Hotel, adjacent to Charing Cross Station, on the evening of Wednesday 1st May.

The evening starts at 6pm, with the meeting opening promptly at 6.30pm 

In addition to the usual AGM business, there will be updates on various matters of regional and national concern.

The evening also will include an Education Presentation and Prize-giving, with a celebration of the success of students from the CertFAA course examined in November 2018.

As is traditional, the meeting will be followed by dinner, for those able to stay. Details of the meeting and dinner, with a booking form for dinner, are available here

Get involved:

As usual, the meeting will include the election of the Officers and Executive Committee to serve until the 2020 AGM and nominations are sought to fill vacancies on the Executive Committee.

A Nomination Form may be downloaded here – the form must be signed by the proposer, seconder and nominee and returned to the Secretary by Wednesday 17th April, latest.

If you are interested in joining the Executive Committee, but would like to understand more about the commitment involved, please contact the Secretary.

The Executive Committee meets monthly in Central London; it also has a small number of Sub-committees focused on particular aspects of its business, which Executive members may be invited to join. Sub-Committees meet periodically, usually on the same day as an Executive Committee meeting.

If, rather than commit to service on the Executive, you would prefer to gain a greater understanding of the operation of the Association by being co-opted to a Sub-committee, please contact the Secretary to discover the opportunities available.

Royals out in force at the London Ball *

On 23rd February the Sheraton Grand Park Lane Hotel’s Grand Ballroom hosted the London Association’s glittering Banquet and Ball, which this year had a Royal theme.

President Richard van Nes welcomed honoured guests NAFD President Abi; BIFD President David Capper; SAIF National President Alan Tucker, with Cathy Scott; BIE National President Barbara Fowley, with Declan MacGuire, and BIE Southern District Chairman Lee Marston with wife Nina.

Top table guests reflect on the musical prowess of the British Army


Guests made a regal entrance to a fanfare of Trumpets of the Irish Guards of the Household Division and were entertained during dinner by a quintet from the Countess of Wessex’s State String Orchestra.


Having enjoyed a delicious four-course dinner, partygoers filled the dancefloor as showband “Supernova” took to the stage.

The evening included a raffle draw for an array of superb prizes, kindly donated by sponsors and local members. The subsequent auction, again with lots generously provided by the event’s sponsors, raised further funds for the President’s nominated beneficiary – The Household Division Charity.

Education, Education, Education & a new course!

At the Autumn General Meeting on 22nd November Certificates and Prizes were presented to students from 2 CertFAA courses held earlier in 2018.
Across the 2 courses, there were 27 successful candidates.

Course R Earlier that month, 20 candidates sat the CertFAA examination at the Hallmark Hotel, Croydon. After a nervous wait, just before Christmas, 18 received positive results.

Course S
On 16th January the latest cohort of students embarked on the CertFAA course.

New Year Honour for Tony Rowland

Tony Rowland, of Rowland Brothers Limited, based in Croydon, has been recognised in the New Year Honours List. His honour reflects both his commitment to supporting the bereaved and his voluntary and fund-raising endeavours benefitting the community in South London and Surrey. Cited for “services to Undertaking and the community in Surrey”, Tony has been awarded an MBE.

A past President of the London Association of Funeral Directors and a past Chairman of the Croydon Association (now LAFD Southern District Association), Tony is well-known in the profession with which he has been involved for 65 years: at the age of 80, he still works in the family business, having started as a 15 year-old apprentice.

In the 1970s Tony set up a bereavement aftercare programme, which now makes emotional support and practical assistance available to all bereaved people throughout Croydon and the surrounding areas. Tony also set up an international repatriation service, with a worldwide network of agents, which has assisted the return of thousands of deceased UK citizens and of many overseas citizens that died in the UK. With such a wealth of experience, Tony lectures at Scotland Yard to police family liaison officers and to the Rapid Response Team at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Tony has been very active in charitable and community work, through involvement in local Rotary, Round Table, Royal British Legion and Freemasonry groups, supporting and promoting schools, Scout and Guide groups, Boys’ Brigade and cadet corps. His fund-raising activities were enhanced by establishing the Rowland Brothers Foundation, the income of which is boosted by regular donations from the family businesses. As Chairman of the local Business Partnership, Tony also was instrumental in the creation of the annual Thornton Heath Festival which further promotes local youth groups.

Clearly a well-deserved award!

Autumn General Meeting 22nd November 2018 UPDATE

The Autumn General Meeting will be held at Amba Hotel, Charing Cross on Thursday 22nd November
The meeting will start promptly at 6.30pm (private bar open from 6pm) and, as is customary, will be followed by dinner.

Attendance at the meeting is free, with dinner charged at £50 each for those able to stay after the meeting.

This is your opportunity to discover how your Association can benefit your business.

Attendance is expected to be high; as space is limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

CertFAA courses 2019 announced

Bookings now are being accepted for the next cohort of the Certificate in Funeral Arranging and Administration course.

The course will run in Central London from 16th January, concluding with the examination on 27th March.
