Autumn General Meeting 22nd November 2018

The Autumn General Meeting will be held at Amba Hotel, Charing Cross on Thursday 22nd November
The meeting will start promptly at 6.30pm (private bar open from 6pm) and, as is customary, will be followed by dinner.

Attendance at the meeting is free, with dinner charged at £50 each for those able to stay after the meeting.

This is your opportunity to discover how your Association can benefit your business.

Come along

  • for an update on matters of local relevance
  • to learn of new developments within your Association in the London region
  • to meet NAFD President Abi Pattenden and learn about developments and issues at national level
  • The meeting will include an Education Awards presentation – join the celebrations!

Western District Meeting 18th October 2018

The next District meeting will be on Thursday 18th October, 6.15pm at the Quintin Hogg Memorial Sports Ground, Chiswick.
Tickets, including a drink on arrival and a delicious supper after the meeting are available at only £20.

Guest speakers include
• Richard Van Nes, President of the London Association of Funeral Directors
• Dr. Tanaji Acharya, who will provide an insight into Hindu religious rites and beliefs

The evening provides an opportunity to socialize and network with fellow members and colleagues.

CertFAA rolls South for course R

The latest Certificate in Funeral Arranging & Administration course opened on August 29th at another new venue – this time in the south of the region.

The Hallmark Hotel, Croydon, is hosting twenty students, from seven member-firms, who are working towards the examination on 7th November. Demand for places is such that this is the largest group to have attended a course.

In response to comments from past students and employers, the course format has been reviewed and now includes a mock examination.

Expanded course content has been accommodated by changing the timetable to include a Saturday session, in addition to the customary evening seminars.

It is hoped the new format should assist candidates with no recent experience of study and exams, which often adds to exam stress.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The students (pictured, with London President Richard van Nes), have a variety of experience of funeral service, which will enhance the learning of the whole group.

New courses announced by Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences

Members might be interested in courses taking place later in 2018 or in 2019. In particular, in late February 2019, the Diploma course in Management of the Dead will again be offered.

Another new venue for the CertFAA

The Certificate in Funeral Arranging and Administration continues to evolve. With two successful courses already in 2018, a third is now open to applicants.

January saw the first foray north of London, with a course held in Hertfordshire attracting students from across the Northern Home Counties and even further afield: two braved the winter weather and the M1 to travel from South Yorkshire!

A course in Central London, with a further 17 students from across the London region, is due to complete on 11th July.

The next CertFAA course will be aimed at candidates from South London and the SouthEast.

For the first time, it will be held at the Hallmark Hotel, near Croydon Airport, starting on 29th August, with the examination on 7th November.

In another new development, by popular request from past students and employers, this course will include a mock exam.

AGM 2018 – all change

The Association’s 73rd Annual General Meeting was held on 19th April 2018 at a new venue – the Amba Hotel, Charing Cross. President Matthew Barber welcomed  over 70 members to a very busy meeting. 

Members were updated on developments within West London Coroner Service, where new staff and systems had been introduced. The investigation into the conduct of the Senior Coroner had concluded in December. There was continuing concern, as the lifting of his suspension had been reported; however he had not returned.

Following debates at last year’s general meetings, about aggregator websites, it was reported that National were supporting London’s concept of a service comparison site, promoting member firms nationally. All were encouraged to attend May’s national conference to learn more about this exciting project.

Members received updates on recent legislative developments and changes to Health & Safety guidance.

Jeremy Field reported developments on national matters of interest, with which NAFD was engaged.

New Chairman Michael Tiney reported on Western District Association, which intended to continue its lively biannual meetings, with the next planned for October. Southern District’s Vice-Chairman Emily Sharma reminded members of its AGM, on 30th April.

Barry Pritchard, Chairman of the Education Sub-committee was pleased to report the increasing popularity of education activities. The Certificate in Funeral Arranging & Administration course that ended in December 2017 had been followed with a January cohort, held north of London for the first time. A subsequent Central London course had commenced on the eve of the AGM and a further course was being finalised for the Autumn, to be held south of London.

A number of changes to the Association’s Executive Committee were announced. Retiring President Matthew congratulated incoming President Richard van Nes and new Vice-President Adam Ginder. Graham Saville continues as Treasurer. In addition to the officers, a further eight members were elected or re-elected to Committee. New members Michael Tiney (Southall Funeral Service) and Matthew Jackson (Co-operative) were welcomed to the team.

Committee members who had stepped down were thanked warmly for their invaluable contributions to the Association. In particular, retiring Social Committee Chairman Claire Austin would be a hard act to follow. She had been the driving force behind the Annual Ball, spending many hours each year to provide a succession of superb events.

New President Richard is keen to extend member engagement and intends to utilise more venues across the London area, for enhanced education and networking opportunities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CertFAA Course Q launches in central London

April 18th was the first evening for the latest cohort of students for the Certificate in Funeral Arranging & Administration.

Fifteen apprehensive students from eight London firms are working towards the examination on 11th July.

The return of the Roaring 20s!

24th February 2018 saw the return the London Association’s celebrated annual Banquet and Ball to the recently renovated Park Lane Hotel.

 

The sumptuous Art Deco Ballroom was a perfect setting for the Great Gatsby themed Ball

President Matthew Barber was delighted that so many partygoers entered into the spirit of the evening, injecting extra 1920’s glamour.
 

Having enjoyed a delicious four-course dinner, revellers soon packed the dance-floor, as showband, “Mixed Feelings”, gave their customary lively performance.

 

President Matthew and his wife Lucy welcomed guests BIFD President Alan Puxley, with wife Sue; SAIF National President Paul Bowley, with Davina; BIE Southern District Chairman Laura Anderson, with Paul; CFSMA representative Brian Taylor, with Nicola; and NAFD Past-President Jeremy Field, with Victoria.

 

The party continued, overseen by Toastmaster Steven Warwick, with a grand raffle draw for an array of superb prizes kindly donated by sponsors and local members. The subsequent auction of a raffle prize raised further funds for the President’s nominated charity.

THANK YOU to the suppliers and local members who contributed to a great evening with their generous sponsorship and to all involved in the raffle and auction for your support. We were pleased many of our sponsors were able to join in the fun.

Course P – CertFAA moves north

January 10th saw the launch of the latest Certificate in Funeral Arranging & Administration course.

In an exciting new development, this course caters for candidates from LAFD’s Northern members and is being held in a new venue in St Alban’s, Hertfordshire.

Fifteen students from 5 firms are working towards the examination on 28th March.
The course continues to attract students with a variety of experience of funeral service.

The continuing popularity of the CertFAA has created demand for 3 courses in 2018.

Following Course P, the  next Central London course commences on April 18th and will be followed by an Autumn course for staff of members in the south.
